MTRC Sunny Bay Station

Hong Kong

Sunny Bay Station is an interchange facility with the existing Tung Chung Line. Serving as the gateway to a unique journey to Hong Kong Disneyland, the station’s curved fabric roof and lightweight steel structure house a direct cross-platform interchange at ground-level.

The organisation is exceptionally clean and efficient. Two electrical and mechanical back-of-house buildings form ‘bookends’ to the interchange hall. Escalators at the ends of the hall lead passengers returning from Disney Station over the tracks to the platform for trains departing to Hong Kong.

The arched fabric roof and its sculpted bow-string trusses are complemented by a dynamically curved glazed ‘windscreen’. Natural light and air flow freely through the interchange hall: it is clearly an outdoor space, and yet with comforting margin of protection from the elements.

The project was awarded Business Week / Architecture Record China Awards Best Green Project 2008, Professional Green Building Council Green Building Award Grand Award in New Building Category 2006 and the Hong Kong Institute of Architect Merit Award 2005.
