Vanderbilt University Eskind Biomedical Research Library
Tennessee, USA
The Eskind Biomedical Research Library and Center for Bioinformatics is a critical component in a fully integrated complex of information resources at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. It combines the collective efforts of teaching, clinical work and research and houses services that allow students and researchers to access information in print or electronic formats, to seek assistance from trained professionals in the acquisition and use of information, and to package information resources into end-user applications.
Designed to mitigate between the collegiate-scaled main campus and the overwhelming urban density of a modern academic medical center, the library serves as the gateway to its location on the campus. The building’s east face forms an arcade to shelter pedestrians and opens onto a plaza at the top of the garden entry. The innovative glass curtain wall uses advanced tensile technologies to achieve a highly transparent plane that is independent of the structural columns supporting the rest of the building.
